Wilbur Ross is a prominent American investor and former government official, best known for his career in restructuring distressed companies and serving as the 39th U.S. Secretary of Commerce. While his early career earned him the nickname "King of Bankruptcy," his later years have been defined by a pivot toward the "New Space Race," focusing on the commercialization of the space industry.
Born in 1937 in New Jersey, Ross graduated from Yale University and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School.
He spent 24 years at Rothschild Inc., where he specialized in bankruptcy and restructuring. In 2000, he founded WL Ross & Co., famously consolidating failing assets in the steel, coal, and textile industries to create multi-billion dollar enterprises like the International Steel Group.
Ross was sworn in under the Trump administration. His tenure was marked by aggressive trade policies and a significant revitalization of the Department of Commerce's role in space policy.
Ross is often credited with modernizing the U.S. government's approach to the commercial space sector. He viewed space not just as a frontier for exploration, but as a massive economic engine. Ross revitalized this office within the Department of Commerce, positioning it as a "one-stop shop" for the commercial space industry to reduce regulatory "red tape." He advocated for moving the responsibility of tracking space debris and managing "space traffic" from the military to the Department of Commerce to better serve private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin. He played a key role in international space diplomacy, presiding over agreements with countries like Australia and Luxembourg to participate in NASA’s Artemis lunar program.
In 2025, Wilbur Ross emerged as a major financial backer and strategic partner and Board Member of iRocket, a startup developing autonomous, reusable small-launch vehicles. Ross’s special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), BPGC Acquisition Corp., entered into a merger agreement with iRocket. The deal valued the company at approximately $400 million and is poised to go public under the ticker symbol IRX. Beyond just a financial investment, Ross joined the iRocket Board of Directors. His involvement is intended to leverage his government experience to help the company secure defense contracts and navigate the regulatory landscape. Ross has stated that iRocket’s "MACH-i" engine technology and 24-hour turnaround capability are essential for national security and the growing demand for "tactically responsive" space launches.
